TOLL BOOTH REMOVAL PROJECT

BEGINS AT I-695 KEY BRIDGE TOLL PLAZA

Closure of Two Toll Lanes/Booths is Step Toward Cashless Toll Collection System

WHAT:   Two toll lanes and the associated toll booths at the I-695 Key Bridge toll plaza on both the Inner and Outer Loops are closing as a step toward the October implementation of cashless tolls. Motorists will be able to use the remaining four toll lanes and booths available in each direction. The E-ZPass Express Lanes at the far left at the plaza will not be impacted. Cash toll lanes will remain available at the Key Bridge plaza, and E-ZPass is accepted in all open toll lanes.

WHEN:  Weather permitting, the toll booth closures will begin this weekend and will be completed by the morning of Monday, July 15, 2019.

WHY:    The toll booth lane closures are a step in the Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) next generation electronic toll collection system. In April, the MDTA announced it will begin cashless toll collection at the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695) in Baltimore and the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) in Harford and Cecil counties. Tolls will be collected via E-ZPass or video tolling. New overhead tolling gantries will be installed by September 2019 at the Hatem and Key bridges. In late October 2019, all tolls at the bridges will be collected electronically via these gantries. However, drivers will continue to travel through the existing toll plazas.
