ROADWORK RESULTS IN HATEM BRIDGE (US 40) LANE CLOSURES

AND
WEEKEND-LONG DETOURS STARTING OCTOBER 19

WHAT:     One eastbound lane of the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) will be closed weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday, October 19 through Friday, November 20. Overnight lane closures may take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following morning.

In addition, one westbound lane will be closed continuously October 26 through November 9.

Westbound US 40 will be temporarily closed at MD 222 for three weekends starting Friday, October 30. The detour will direct motorists to northbound MD 222, to southbound I-95, to southbound MD 155 (Exit 89), to westbound US 40. Eastbound US 40 traffic will be shifted onto westbound US 40 at the Ohio Street & Ostego Street intersection and back onto eastbound US 40 at MD 222 intersection.

NOTE: There is no toll in the southbound direction at the I-95 John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (I-95) toll plaza.

WHEN:   Weather permitting, eastbound lane closures will begin the morning of Monday, October 19.

Weather permitting, westbound lane closures will begin the morning of Monday, October 26.

Weather permitting, westbound US 40 at MD 222 will be closed:

  • From 9 p.m. Friday, October 30, to 5 a.m. Monday, November 2;
  • From 9 p.m. Friday, November 13, to 5 a.m. Monday, November 16; and
  • From 9 p.m. Friday, November 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, November 23.

WHY:              Toll Dollars at Work. The closures are part of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) project to reconstruct the existing pavement from the E Street Bridge approach to MD 222, remove the existing toll plaza, and construct a new toll gantry and Information Technology System equipment to support all-electronic tolling operations west of the Hatem Bridge.
