**OFF-PEAK WORK WITH WEEKEND IMPACTS ON I-895**

Submitted by Tamory Winfield on

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 20, 2021

**OFF-PEAK WORK WITH WEEKEND IMPACTS ON I-895**

Two-Way Traffic Pattern at I-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel During Weekends in April & May

Pavement Repair Operation Will Close Northbound I-895 Traffic South of Tunnel April 23-25

Use I-695/Key Bridge or I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as Alternate Routes

WHAT:          One tube of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895) will continuously close over five weekends starting this weekend until the weekend of May 21.  Two-way traffic (one lane in each direction) will operate in the open tube.  In addition, there will be no access to northbound I-895 south of the tunnel due to necessary pavement repair operations on northbound I-895 at Childs Street the weekend of April 23.  Traffic will be temporarily detoured to I-95.

We remind motorists to obey speed limits and maintain a safe following distance.

WHEN:          Weather permitting, there will be no access to northbound I-895 south of the tunnel from Friday, April 23, at 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday, April 25.

Weather permitting, the northbound tube will be closed with two-way traffic in the southbound tube from:

  • Friday, April 23, at 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday, April 26;
  • Friday, May 14, at 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday, May 17; and
  • Friday, May 21, at 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday, May 24.

                        Weather permitting, the southbound tube will be closed with two-way traffic in the northbound tube from:

  • Friday, April 30, at 10 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 2; and
  • Friday, May 7, at 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday, May 10.

WHY:       Toll Dollars At Work: The tube closures are part of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) three-year, $189 million I-895 Bridge Project to replace the 60-year-old bridge and Holabird Avenue exit ramp north of the Harbor Tunnel and to rehabilitate the Harbor Tunnel.  The project began in April 2018 and all lanes reopened to traffic during peak times ahead of schedule in December 2020 with remaining work expected to be completed this summer through off-peak closures. Work includes repairs to pavement markings, joints, drain and retaining wall sealing & cleaning.  Follow #895Bmore on Twitter for updates.
