Bay Bridge Off-Peak Joint Replacement Resumes

Roadway Plates Allow Crucial Deck Repairs, Lanes To Reopen Each Morning

March 9, 2021 (Baltimore, Md.) – The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) remains committed to keeping motorists safe while conducting crucial facility maintenance. Weather permitting, beginning the week of March 15, crews will resume overnight joint replacement in the center and left lanes of the westbound span of the Bay Bridge while minimizing impacts to drivers. Steel plates are necessary during this ongoing nighttime joint replacement work, in order for crews to reopen the lanes each morning to traffic.

During last year’s 24/7 westbound right lane closure which was completed in early spring, crews replaced the joints in that lane as part of the critical deck rehabilitation. Later that spring, crews used roadway plates as they worked on the westbound span’s center and left lane joints. Those westbound plates were removed late last year when work was paused with the arrival of colder temperatures and plowing operations during winter weather events.

Crews will resume this crucial work next week with the project team moving at a pace ahead of the original schedule. This work was originally anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2021. However, weather permitting, the joint replacement work and required use of steel plates is expected to wrap up by the end of May. We thank our bridge customers and the surrounding communities for their patience during this necessary work to keep the bridge safe.
