GOVERNOR WES MOORE APPOINTS SNEAD AS NEW MEMBER OF MARYLAND TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY BOARD

BALTIMORE, MD (July 27, 2023) – Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced the appointment of Anne Arundel County Transportation Officer, Samuel Snead, to a four-year term on the Maryland Transportation Authority Board. The Board serves as the policy-setting, decision-making and governing body for the Maryland Transportation Authority, which finances, builds, operates, preserves, and improves the state’s toll facilities and toll roads.

“Samuel Snead’s extensive background and proven track record in the transportation sector make him the perfect candidate to serve this important role on the MDTA Board,” said Governor Wes Moore. “His leadership skills and innovative thinking will be an asset to the Board and to all Marylanders.”

Mr. Snead brings a wealth of experience in transportation planning, policy development and project management to the Authority Board. Since 2021, he has served as Transportation Officer of the Anne Arundel County Department of Transportation. Prior to that, he was a head transportation planner for Baltimore County, and served with the U.S. Department of Transportation as a senior program manager. Additionally, he has held transportation positions with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; the Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization; Arlington County, Va.; and in the private sector as a transportation planner/engineer.

Mr. Snead holds a bachelor’s degree in urban studies with a focus on infrastructure from Brown University, a master’s in community planning from the University of Rhode Island, and a master’s in management from American Public University.

Throughout his career, Mr. Snead has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and has consistently worked toward advancing transportation initiatives that positively impact communities.

“Samuel Snead is a welcome addition to the Maryland Transportation Authority Board,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, MDTA Chairman and Maryland Transportation Secretary. “His knowledge of transit, traffic, bicycle and pedestrian system planning will greatly benefit the Board’s work, and his strategic vision will help us navigate the complex transportation challenges and opportunities we face.”

Established in 1971 by the Maryland General Assembly, the Maryland Transportation Authority is financed by toll revenue without relying on state tax dollars. As it works to connect customers to life’s opportunities, the agency is dedicated to innovative transportation solutions that improve connectivity, create opportunity, enhance safety, promote equity, and support economic development.

Newly appointed board member Samuel Snead said, “It is an honor to be appointed to serve my state as a board member for MDTA. My intention is to represent the people of Maryland’s best interests by working cooperatively with fellow board members and providing insight based on my experience in the transportation industry. I believe this will allow us to develop the most impactful outcomes.”

The Maryland Transportation Authority Board is comprised of eight citizens appointed by the governor. Members serve four-year terms and cannot serve more than three consecutive terms.

At the most recent Authority Board meeting, Secretary Wiedefeld and Maryland Transportation Authority Executive Director Will Pines both thanked outgoing Board Member William C. Ensor III for his service to the Board.
