CHANGES COMING TO BALTIMORE HARBOR TUNNEL (I-895) TOLL PLAZA

Progress Continues with the MDTA’s Next Generation Electronic Toll Collection System

BALTIMORE, MD – As part of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) next generation electronic toll collection system, the MDTA is replacing existing toll-lane hardware and software at all toll facilities starting with the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).  Due to these changes, customers are highly encouraged to pay close attention to lane signals and customer feedback signs in the toll plaza.

Motorists will see the following changes at the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel toll booths:

  • Beginning May 13, the traffic lights on the island behind each toll booth will be removed permanently starting with toll lane 14.  On June 14, the MDTA will begin removing the remaining traffic lights as each lane is converted.  All Harbor Tunnel toll lanes are expected to be complete by August 5.
  • On May 27, the customer feedback signs behind each toll booth will be replaced starting with toll lane 14. Installation in other lanes will begin on June 14 as each lane is converted.  The customer feedback signs will continue to provide information about E-ZPass account balances.
  • Beginning June 17, the overhead lights above each toll-lane will no longer show flashing yellow for dedicated E-ZPass® lanes. The lights will show green for open lanes and red for closed lanes. The signs on the canopy will continue to indicate which lanes are the E-ZPass® Only lanes versus Cash accepting lanes.
  • New overhead signage will be installed after all toll lanes are converted.
