STATEMENT FROM MDTA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JIM PORTS (MARCH 17)

Submitted by Tamory Winfield on

March 17, 2020 – In response to Governor Larry Hogan’s executive order this morning and to help limit the spread of COVID-19, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) will initiate statewide all-electronic (cashless) tolling effective at 3 p.m. today until further notice, and will close all E-ZPass® Maryland Customer Service Centers effective Wednesday, March 18, until further notice.

To assist Marylanders with these changes, the MDTA will provide video tolling at the cash rates at toll facilities where cash is normally accepted, and establish grace periods for E-ZPass® Discount Plan expirations and Notices of Toll Due.

We thank drivers for their understanding as we strive to protect our employees and customers.

All-Electronic Tolling Statewide

Toll collection will be automated at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (I-95), Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95), Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895), Bay Bridge (US 50/301) and Nice/Middleton Bridge (US 301).

All drivers should KEEP MOVING through toll plazas without stopping. Cash payment lanes will operate as video tolling (cashless) lanes. Motorists who usually pay with cash will be mailed a Notice of Toll Due for the cash toll rate.

E-ZPass® will be accepted in all open toll lanes. E-ZPass® customers using a rental vehicle can add the vehicle temporarily to their E-ZPass® account. Rental car drivers without an E-ZPass® should contact the rental car company prior to traveling a route that includes a toll facility.

The Intercounty Connector (ICC)/MD 200, I-95 Express Toll Lanes in Baltimore, Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695) and Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) already operate all-electronic tolling.

Closure of E-ZPass Customer Service Centers

All E-ZPass® Maryland Customer Service Centers, including those at MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration branches, will close effective Wednesday, March 18, until further notice. MDTA will extend the time to pay Notices of Toll Due and citations without penalty, and will extend E-ZPass® Discount Plan expirations. Additional details on these extensions will be released as information becomes available.

Customers should visit ezpassmd.com or call 1-888-321-6824 (711 for MD Relay) to replenish/update their accounts or pay video tolls. The interactive voice response system is available 24/7. However, to speak with a customer-service representative, customers may call the toll-free line between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. New customers can also open E-ZPass® accounts online at ezpassmd.com.

All E-ZPass® outreach events, including pop-up events scheduled in Queen Anne’s and Anne Arundel counties, have been postponed until further notice.
