Bay Bridge Fourth of July Traffic Tips

Motorists should expect heavy traffic at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and along the US 50 corridor Wednesday, July 1, through Monday, July 6, in both directions. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) recommends the following times to cross the bridge to alleviate travel delays.

• Eastbound:
  
  • Wednesday, July 1 – before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 2 – before 7 a.m. and after 9 p.m.
  • Friday, July 3 – before 7 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 4 – before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 5 – before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
  • Monday, July 6 – before 12 p.m. and after 7 p.m.
• Westbound:
  
  • Wednesday, July 1 – before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 2 – before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Friday, July 3 – before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 4 – before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 5 – before 9 a.m. and after 11 p.m.
  • Monday, July 6 – before 6 a.m. and after 4 p.m.

Two-Way Traffic Reminder

Two-way traffic operations (during which one lane of eastbound traffic is directed to the westbound span) at the Bay Bridge may be limited based on westbound traffic volumes, as bridge officials strive to mitigate delays on both sides of the bridge.

Inclement weather can also prevent or disrupt two-way traffic operations. Two-way operations are prohibited during bridge wind warnings or restrictions, fog or limited visibility, and periods of precipitation, and may also be suspended during incidents. Weather and traffic permitting, two-way traffic operations will be implemented to help alleviate eastbound delays at the Bay Bridge.

There are no set times for two-way traffic because operations are based on real-time traffic volumes and conditions, including weather, emergencies, and incidents.

The MDTA Police remind motorists that it is never safe to drive under the influence of alcohol, prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or illegal substances. Impaired driving puts your life and the lives of others at risk.

During the holiday period, law enforcement will be highly visible and actively enforcing laws against dangerous driving, seat belt violations, and criminal activity.
