MDTA POLICE ARREST IMPAIRED DRIVER, RECOVER GUN AND OPIOIDS ON I-95 IN BALTIMORE

Driver Under the Influence of Drugs

BALTIMORE, MD - On Wednesday, Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police arrested a Baltimore man who had hundreds of illegal prescription pills and a loaded gun in his car.

An MDTA Police Officer stopped Barry Michael Grove Jr., 35, on southbound I-95 in Baltimore City on July 20. Grove was in a 1997 Ford Expedition, following another vehicle too closely. After Grove failed field sobriety tests, officers searched the vehicle and located the gun and drugs in the cabin. Grove was taken into custody without incident.

The vehicle search yielded a loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol with an altered serial number. Officers also recovered nearly 200 prescription pills, including the opioid OxyContin, from the vehicle.

MDTA Police charged Grove with drug possession - not marijuana, firearms possession violations, possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony, altering a firearm ID number, and possession of ammunition after being prohibited from possessing a firearm, among other charges. Officers also charged him with multiple traffic violations.

After processing, officers transported Grove to the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Facility for an appearance before a District Court Commissioner. He was held on $300,000 bail.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a nationally accredited force, is the seventh-largest law-enforcement agency in the state, with more than 600 sworn and civilian law-enforcement professionals. MDTA Police officers provide law enforcement at the MDTA's highways, bridges and tunnels; at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport; and at the Port of Baltimore.
