Resiliency

Waterways:

Where possible, MDTA has installed clear span bridges over waterways and 100-year floodplains. The replacement bridge over the Big Gunpowder River is a clear span bridge. The existing piers within the waterway are being removed as part of the bridge replacement project so that the flow of the Big Gunpowder River is unobstructed.

Flood Attenuation:

MDTA constructed a flood attenuation facility at Old Joppa Road. The intent of creating this facility is to reduce downstream discharges on an unnamed tributary to the Little Gunpowder Falls, thereby reducing the 100-year water surface elevations for privately owned and improved properties downstream of I-95 along this tributary.

Oversized Culverts:

Throughout Harford County, culverts were sized to accommodate discharges associated with the ultimate build-out condition of the surrounding land uses. While this approach entails over-design and more up-front expenditures, it provides assurance to the local government that planned developments in the vicinity of the I-95 corridor will not have to incur additional costs associated with providing quantity control of stormwater runoff.
