4 MONTHS REMAINING TO PAY VIDEO TOLLS AND SAVE

Civil Penalty Waiver Grace Period for Video Tolls Continues Through November 30

BALTIMORE, MD (July 26, 2022)With four months remaining in its Customer Assistance Plan offering a civil penalty waiver grace period for Video Tolls, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is continuing to urge customers to take advantage of the plan by paying unpaid Video Tolls – either in one payment or incrementally over time – and make sure they are paid in full by 11:59 p.m. November 30, 2022.

The MDTA Board approved the nine-month Customer Assistance Plan in February. For every Video Toll transaction paid in full while the plan is in place, the corresponding civil penalty is waived. In addition, toll bill referrals to the Central Collection Unit (CCU) and MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) have ceased until December 1, 2022.

It’s important to remember that the Customer Assistance Plan is not toll forgiveness, nor is it an elimination of tolls owed. Tolling remains in effect statewide, and drivers are responsible for paying the outstanding toll amount.

Start toll payments now – don’t wait until it’s too late. Customers now have four months remaining to take advantage of the plan’s limited-time opportunity. For many, this remaining time can serve as a temporary payment plan, allowing customers the opportunity to stretch out toll payments over the waiver grace period.

As of July 18, 2022, $53.8 million in civil penalties have been waived for approximately 352,000 drivers and businesses that have paid their outstanding Video Tolls. For customers who choose not to pay their Video Tolls before the due date on the notice, mailings of citations/civil penalties will continue during the grace period and will remain in effect if tolls are not paid by 11:59 p.m. November 30.

 

On December 1, 2022, customers will be responsible for the full amounts of all unpaid tolls as well as any civil penalties, which will be due based on the printed due dates. Also on December 1, toll debt referrals to CCU for collections actions and MDOT MVA for vehicle registration suspensions will resume.

At https://csc.driveezmd.com/pay-tolls-now customers are offered additional savings by converting their Video Tolls to E-ZPass or Pay-By-Plate. (See sample conversion notice, at right.) To take advantage of this opportunity, customers must pay the entire balance at the time of conversion.

Also, with DriveEzMD, Video Tolling customers – can save 15% (maximum of $5 per transaction) by paying their Video Tolls before the notice is mailed.

The MDTA will continue posting COVID-19 deferred tolls through summer 2022. If you believe you received or paid a toll charge and/or civil penalty in error, please call 1-888-321-6824 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, and the MDTA will review on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility for reimbursement. The MDTA reminds E-ZPass customers that their statements may show charges that are not in error, such as:

  • Unused Commuter Trip charge for unused Discount Plan trips at the end of the plan period (view Discount Plan video);
  • a $1.50 monthly account maintenance fee for E-ZPass accounts without a Maryland address (this fee is waived for using Maryland toll facilities at least three times in the previous statement period); and
  • an Image Toll charge when the transponder is not properly mounted in the vehicle (view Image Toll video).

Customers may also incur Video Tolls billed at a higher toll rate if the customer fails to maintain a positive balance on their E-ZPass Account. A Notice of Toll Due is mailed to the registered vehicle owner when a Video Toll is incurred. Payment for Video Tolls should be made by following the instructions on the notice or at https://csc.driveezmd.com/pay-tolls-now. Video Toll transactions may not be recorded on an E-ZPass Account statement, when the Video Toll was generated while the customer’s account was not in good standing.

NOTE: The most common reason an E-ZPass customer receives Video Tolls is insufficient funds on the E-ZPass account. Since Video Tolls are recorded to the registered vehicle owner and are separate from E-ZPass accounts, replenishing E-ZPass account funds will not pay for outstanding Video Tolls.

The Maryland Transportation Authority finances, owns, operates, secures and improves the state’s eight toll facilities. The MDTA is financed by toll revenue without relying on state tax dollars.
