ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS
NOW OPERATIONAL AT MARYLAND HOUSE
AND CHESAPEAKE HOUSE TRAVEL PLAZAS ON I-95
BALTIMORE, MD – Today, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and its travel plaza partner Areas USA were joined by Maryland Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary R. Earl Lewis, Jr. in announcing electric vehicle charging stations are now operational at the Maryland House and Chesapeake House travel plazas on I-95 in northeast Maryland.
“With the Thanksgiving holiday right around the corner, this is great news for our customers traveling up and down the I-95 corridor,” said Deputy Secretary Lewis. “The charging stations are free to our customers, and you really can’t beat the convenience. You can grab a bite to eat inside the travel plaza while you’re waiting for your vehicle to charge.”
The Maryland House and Chesapeake House each have four universal charging stations plus one more station in a handicapped-accessible parking space. The Maryland House has eight Tesla charging stations and the Chesapeake House has ten Tesla charging stations (only for use with Tesla vehicles).
“The MDTA is proud to support Governor Larry Hogan’s continued commitment to the environment and energy conservation,” said MDTA Executive Director Kevin C. Reigrut. “This is a win-win for our customers and for the environment.”
The Tesla charging stations were installed at no cost to the MDTA. The universal charging stations were provided thanks to the Electric Vehicle Institute and a grant from the Maryland Energy Administration. The stations at Maryland’s travel plazas join a growing list of more than 420 Supercharger Stations in North America.
“Since taking office, the Hogan Administration has invested $4 million to expand Maryland’s network of alternative fueling options like the electric vehicle chargers here at Maryland House,” stated Mary Beth Tung, Maryland Energy Administration Director. “Expanding Maryland's network of electric vehicle chargers benefits our residents, businesses, and visitors, while also reducing our reliance on imported petroleum fuel.”
The Maryland House Travel Plaza is off I-95 at mile marker 82, between Exit 80 (MD 543) and Exit 85 (MD 22). The Chesapeake House Travel Plaza is off I-95 at mile marker 97, between Exit 93 (MD 222) and Exit 100 (MD 272).
